Bert the African Grey parrot. A year later.
I’m glad I took photos of Bert our African Grey when we first got him. We’ve had him for a little over a year now. I was organizing photos when I came across some of Bert’s newer photos and was surprised to see the difference in his feathers from a year ago. It’s something you don’t notice in a day to day change. Bert was previously in a very loving home, my wife’s grandpa owned him for many years, but when he passed we took Bert in (we think Bert was around 15-20 years old when we got him). Her grandpa smoked though, and Bert had always been on a seed only diet. Add the fact that he had lost his long time flock companion, and Bert was not doing well. My wife, being a veterinarian, nursed him back to decent health. After a year out of the smoke, a much better diet and having other birds (and animals) to interact with everyday, I was happy to see that he physically looks better. I put together the above collage to kind of show how his feathers have improved. How about you, do you have any pets that are rescues?

Isn’t it amazing how resilient these parrots are? I have a CAG that I rescued from an abusive situation. Riley will still bite if you try to reach in his cage, but if you let him come out on his own, he’s a sweetheart.
I joined BirdClick and FeedingFeathers lists to learn how to shape his behavior to be more acceptable and to feed him a more healthy diet. Since getting him I have also gotten an Orange Wing Amazon.
Thank you from one bird lover to another for taking Bert under your wing the way you have and giving him a better life!

Hi Margaret- Sounds like you’re doing a great job too. Kudos to you! About half or more of our pets are rescues. We also have a rescued Amazon!
Thanks for stopping by.
