Thursday night I took 3rd in the Twitter Poker Tour event for my second in a row cash in the event. It was New Years day, so the field was a bit smaller but there was still a good turnout with 24 players. From there my bankroll went up and down from session to session until it rested at $325 for the week. So all-in-all a good week.
I think I learned a lesson in a round about way this week. I hate having losing sessions, I doubt anyone likes it. Too often though I stick around playing longer than maybe I should just trying to win some or all of it back. Obviously this can change the way I play, meaning I’m not playing my best poker anymore. Usually it doesn’t work and eventually I have to quit playing anyway. Now that I have an Xbox 360 and a few addicting games though, I’ve found it real easy to walk away to play some video games and come back to hold ‘em with a fresh mind and attitude. I know I’m not reinventing the wheel here, this isn’t really a new lesson learned, but it served as a good reminder that I play way too much bad poker than I let myself believe. Oh, and another lesson learned this morning, don’t stick your finger in hot bacon grease. You’re welome.

Over the past few years, I’ve suffered from never wanting to leave the tables until I had no choice (i.e., I ran out of money). That’s not to say I never made money. I just found myself time and time again driving home mad at myself because I could have left with more (or at least some) money in my pocket. This year I started over with some “rules” that I’m trying to live by. For me, the most important is to leave once I’ve accumulated at least twice my initial buy-in. That does two things for me: 1) cuts down on the time I spend at the tables and 2) makes it more likely that I won’t chase away my profits. So far so good. However, the year is still young!
